Chapter 1 Look Inside

Chapter 01

Meghan

The cemetery never really scared Meghan. She’d always understood that death is a natural part of the life cycle, and there’s nothing sinister about being laid to rest. It brought her a sense of peace each time she visited her partner there.

Meghan crouched to the ground and ran the pad of her thumb over the name etched on the headstone. She still couldn't bring herself to say it out loud... honestly, she couldn’t bring herself to think it. But she liked it there. She liked having that companionship again, even if it wasn’t quite the same.

“I think you’d laugh if you could see me now,” Meghan mused quietly, casting her eyes to the grass beneath her feet.

When Nick Milan convinced Meghan to join his shifter protection agency, she saw it as a way to escape the darkness of the police force. She was sure her new job would be all popstars and divas... that she would be guarding starlets against paparazzi, crazy fans, and the myriad of other weirdos that were attracted to those in the spotlight.

As a former detective, Meghan Bennett was ready for something a little less stressful than her previous job. Not that she wasn’t up for it... she could still kick the asses of any of the guys on her old team, not to mention the perps. She was, after all, a leopard shifter, and as such, she knew that she would almost always have the upper hand when it came to the fight.

The problem was, she’d been partnered with someone who didn’t have that same advantage. If only she could have given some of her shifter strength to her human partner, Jayce. Together they’d busted a human trafficking ring and found out that their boss—the police chief—had been involved… and Jayce had paid the price. Meghan would never forget finding him shot dead in his apartment. She’d seen plenty of crime scenes, but never one that involved someone that she cared about.

“He’d never laugh at you,” a woman’s voice said softly behind her. Meghan looked up to see Jayce’s widow, Maria, standing beside her.

Meghan gave the other woman a half-hearted smile. “He’d throw a few ribs, at least.”

She stood, and the women embraced. Though Meghan’s heart broke for Maria, she was grateful that Maria had never held any animosity toward her for her husband’s death. Meghan didn’t feel the same. She’d always blame herself for not saving him, but Maria had always been adamant that the blame was solely placed on the crooked police chief.

“I guess you had the same idea as me,” Maria said. “Stopping by to wish him a happy birthday.” Maria’s voice held her regular note of sadness, the one that tugged at Meghan’s heart though she never knew what the right thing was to say.

“Yeah—”

“I’m sure you’ve got to run off to your new job, so I don’t want to keep you,” Maria said, giving Meghan an easy out. “But it was good to see you. I’m sure he’s glad you stopped by too.”

“Thanks, Maria. I don’t want to rush, but I do have to leave for work. You take care now.”

“You too.”

Meghan waved goodbye and left Maria alone with her husband’s gravestone, the sorrow in her chest heavy... a feeling she’d grown used to living with by then. She knew Maria had too, but it didn’t mean she hated the fact that they needed to be any less

Though Meghan didn’t miss being a cop, she missed Jayce. He was the older brother she never had, someone who she loved and could rely on, and she missed him every single day.

So many times, she wished they hadn’t taken that case. It wasn’t worth any of the awards or recognition for the work they’d done. The fact that Jayce wasn’t around to share them with her overshadowed it all and made thinking about any of it churn her stomach.

Which was why she jumped at the chance to leave detective work behind and join Nick’s security agency when a cop friend suggested it might be a pretty good fit for her. So far, it had been great. There were no police department politics interfering with her day-to-day work, no dealing with street scum and other examples of humanity’s worst-of-the-worst. And best of all, no reminders of the worst day of her entire life.

As for the popstars, she had been given a few of them to work for when she first started. Those jobs were easy... mostly escorting them from building to car to building while controlling the hordes of people who followed them around.

But the assignments had increased in difficulty as she impressed Nick with her abilities. He’d moved her from the popstars to the politicians, and though they’d all been surprised when her client had been threatened by terrorists, Meghan had shined while thwarting the group’s kidnapping attempt.

Not on her watch, no way.

Though stress wasn’t something she was looking for, the exhilaration that the assignment had provided her showed her she still liked being in the thick of it.

When Nick had asked her if she enjoyed being back in the game, she couldn’t help but smile. She had missed the action; it was what she was all about after all. She was both predator and protector.

That’s why she had agreed to the next assignment, one Nick swore would be perfect for her. Not a pop star or a diplomat this time... a goddamn scientist.

A scientist that someone, most likely someone or someones in corporate pharmaceuticals, wanted dead.
